MORE THAN SEVEN MILLION CUBANS HAVE DEBATED NEW STRUCTURE OF SOCIALISM IN CUBA

More than seven million people have participated in the meetings where the Draft Economic and Social Policy Guidelines for the Party and the Revolution (Proyecto de Lineamientos de la Política Económica y Social del Partido y la Revolución) is being debated, told Inter Press yesterday Marino Murillo, vice president of the Council of States. This Draft document is the central theme of the Sixth Party Congress to be held in Havana next month.

The Sixth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba is expected to redefine the structure of the kind of socialism that Cuba wants to build. Preliminary results of the debates name the calls for more popular participation at all levels, a more practical approach to the solution of our problems, more accountability of officials in their responsibilities, and the realization that the Cuban state cannot afford the large subsidies that it has offered its citizens for more than fifty years no matter how precarious the economic situation may have been.

Representatives of Cuban civil society have also had the opportunity to circulate their opinions through alternate means such as blogs, social networks and e-mail lists reaching a wide audience, continues Inter Press.

Mariela Castro, head of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) also talking to IPS said that “the only guarantee of democracy in a society is people’s participation, the fact that this is being given the importance it deserves fills me with hope that we will follow the path to a kind of socialism that is closer to the one I imagine.

Granma, the official Communist Party newspaper, has reported that 619, 387 proposals for deletion, additions and modifications, and expectations of doubts and concerns, regarding the Draft Guidelines have been duly gathered for reference. It also promises detailed information about the final results of the discussion process.
